How to Prepare for Your Child's EHCP Annual Review

The annual review is your chance to make sure your child's EHCP still reflects their needs. Here's how to prepare, what to bring, and how to make your voice heard.

An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a living document. The annual review is the moment each year when everyone around your child stops to ask a simple question: is this plan still right? With a little preparation, it can be one of the most powerful meetings in your child's year.

What the annual review is for

The review looks at three things:

  • The progress your child has made towards the outcomes in the plan
  • Whether the needs described in the plan are still accurate
  • Whether the provision (the support) is still enough

If any of these have changed, the plan can — and should — be updated.

Preparing ahead of the meeting

  1. Re-read the current EHCP. Note anything that no longer matches your child.
  2. Gather evidence. School reports, work samples, letters from professionals, and your own observations from home all count.
  3. Ask your child. Their views matter and should be represented, in whatever way works for them.
  4. Write down your priorities. Three clear points are easier to land than a long list.

Making your voice heard on the day

You know your child better than anyone in the room. Bring your notes, ask for anything unclear to be explained, and don't be afraid to ask for provision to be strengthened where the evidence supports it.

If it helps, we can attend the review with you — preparing beforehand and advocating alongside you on the day.
